I practice Integrative Rehabilitation Medicine, drawing on the best of Traditional Western Medicine and rehabilitation principles, with thoughtful incorporation of principles and practices from complementary therapies and mind-body medicine. My practice is set at an outpatient clinic and rehabilitation facility affiliated with Harvard Medical School. I also see patients on our subacute rehabilitation unit. The institution is famous for excellence in Senior Care (geriatrics) but I care for adult patients of all ages. Appropriate diagnoses include chronic pain, mobility impairment, diseases of the spine, myofascial pain, fibromyalgia, and neuropathic pain.
I earned my MD at Duke University, and trained in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) and Internal Medicine at Harvard Medical School. I also completed a clinical fellowship in Integrative Medicine at University of Maryland.
My interest in enhancing the expression of intrinsic healing intelligence has grown out of my personal experience and clinical knowledge. This has led to training in a variety of approaches to healing, including osteopathic manual medicine, zero balancing, visual imagery, meditation, mindfulness-based stress-reduction, energy medicine, as well as 18 years’ practice of Tai Chi, Chi Kung and yoga. I have some knowledge about, but do not formally practice traditional chinese medicine, acupuncture, functional medicine, homeopathy, herbal medicine, and naturopathic medicine.
I listen carefully to my patients, and thoroughly review the history to understand how physical, mental, emotional, chemical, and spiritual factors contribute to their difficulties. I base my approach on the clinical situation and the patient's preference. When appropriate, I diagnose and treat pain problems like most doctors do (with lab tests, x-rays, MRIs, medications, injections, rehabilitation therapy, referral to surgery and so on). If the patient is interested, I go beyond that to address the interface of body, mind, and spirit, and incorporate less-invasive approaches in order to facilitate healing. I work closely with physical and occupational therapy, mind-body specialists, behavioral medicine, and practitioners of complementary medicine.
